You should see the mountains of galleys that are arriving on my
doorstep nearly hourly! That’s because I spent the weekend at the
Javits Center in NYC at BookExpoAmerica. Most of the significant
publishers were there, and some really celebrity authors (Richard
Russo, Tracy Kidder, Jeanette Walls, Tomie dePaola, and Pete Dexter)
inscribed their books and participated on panel discussions about the
fate of the book as we know it today.
I was on a panel called
“Book Group Facilitators Sound Off,” moderated by the uber-.com woman
of books, Carol Fitzgerald.
Right now I‘m reading the galley, THE
ANGEL’S GAME by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. Remember how we devoured his first
book, THE SHADOW OF THE WIND? This new one is a prequel to SHADOW OF
THE WIND, and even though I know who’s good, who’s bad, and what I
should watch for, I have absolutely no idea how Zafon is going to tie
it all up. This is another red-light book, one I have to have in the
car to read when I’m stopped at the light! Aren’t you glad that you’re
not behind me?
I can’t wait to dive into HER FEARFUL SYMMETRY by
Audrey Niffenegger. This is a big year for historical fiction, so I’ll
keep you posted about that genre.
